Cooking With Bruce Wayne - Mushroom Super Broth

What if I told you there was a broth that is pack full of super immune builders that you could easily make to add to your dog’s daily meal? What if I told you this broth had the following health benefits: supports liver and kidney function, improves skin and coat, helps fight viral infections, contains antioxidants, improves overall health AND aids in the fight against CANCER?! What if I told you that the broth costs less than your cup of Starbucks coffee? I just blew your mind, didn’t I?! :-)

One word: Mushrooms. I know what you’re thinking. Aren’t mushrooms toxic for dogs? The ASPCA warns us to stay clear of mushrooms. Wrong! Yes, some mushrooms are toxic for dogs. There are over 160+ various types of mushrooms around the world. My assumption is that it is easier to tell people to stay away from mushrooms in general, as it can be easy to mix them up and accidentally give your dog the wrong kind of mushrooms. But, come on, we are all intelligent dog parents. I truly believe that caring dog Moms and Dads are capable of educating themselves to learn about the good and bad types of mushrooms.

I recently saw a video made and posted by Rodney Habib and Dr. Karen Becker  that inspired me to try this mushroom broth myself. If you are not following them, you need to be!! I’ve linked their video at the end of this post so that you can visually see just how easy this broth is to make.

As stated by Dr. Karen Becker, there are 4 types of mushrooms: toxic, hallucinatory, culinary and medicinal. It is very important to do your research and make sure you know and understand what types of mushrooms you are working with. With there being so many types of mushrooms, it can be easy to accidentally put the wrong mushroom in your broth. The 4 mushrooms we are working with are: portobella, shiitake, oyster and king oyster. Like, Dr. Karen Becker, I do not have a fresh mushroom farm near me, so I go to Wegman’s to purchase fresh mushrooms. This is where knowing your mushrooms comes into play. Study what the 4 look like. At Wegmans, you have the ability to purchase mushrooms by the pound, which is great because I can literally buy just a few shiitake, which only costs $.56 versus buying a prepackaged bundle at $3.99 or more. However, knowing your mushrooms is key, as it is easy for someone to put a mushroom in the wrong bin. Always better safe than sorry.

My mushroom broth literally cost me $3.18 to make. Now, your first time will be a little more costly if you decide to put in the optional Ginger and/or Turmeric. However, if you buy the ground Ginger and Turmeric like I did, it’ll last you months and the only things you’ll need to buy every other week are the mushrooms. Also, mine is slightly cheaper because I cannot find fresh King Oyster Mushrooms near me. I’ve been to 5 different stores around the Baltimore/Harford County areas and have yet to find them. If this happens to you, use what you can find and just portion it out accordingly. So for $6.36 a month, I can strengthen Bruce Wayne’s immune system and help him fight off cancer! I honestly don’t know why anyone wouldn’t do this.

The ingredients needed for this broth are:

  • Portabello Mushroom
  • Shiitake Mushroom
  • King Oyster Mushroom
  • Oyster Mushroom
  • Turmeric (optional)
  • Ginger (optional)
  • Butter (unsalted)
  • 2 cups of water

How to make this easy broth:

Chop your mushrooms (1 cup); Melt unsalted butter in pot; add mushroom and saute; Add 2 cups of water (and optional ginger/turmeric; and simmer for 20 min.

Once the broth has cooled, put into a blender and blend until desired liquid consistency is achieved.

  • Chop up mushrooms in equal parts (1 cup)
  • Melt butter in pot
  • Add mushrooms and saute
  • Add 2 cups of water
  • Add Ginger and/or Turmeric (optional)
  • Simmer for 20 minutes (then let cool)
  • Blend the broth
  • Refrigerate or pour into ice cube trays and freeze for later use (refrigerated broth can be stored for up to 5 days while frozen broth can be stored for up to 6 months)

Once cooled, set aside and add into your dog’s meal. It is suggested to add 1 tablespoon per 25 pounds. Since I pre-make Bruce Wayne’s raw meals (blog post on his updated meals coming soon), I make the broth at the same time and put in a little less than 1 teaspoon into one of his daily meals. Bruce Wayne has to eat 3 times a day or else he will vomit bile, so I add the broth into his lunch meal and flag the container so that I know which container has the broth. As you can see below, I flagged his lunch container that will contain the broth with a Batman sticker ;-)

I keep all his meals in these super convenient glass containers made by Sage Spoonfuls. I have the 2 oz. jars, which is perfect, as each one of Bruce Wayne’s meals are about .8 oz. They are both freezer and dishwasher friendly. I can sleep easier at night knowing that his food is stored in glass since there has been research showing that you should not store your dog food in plastic. (I’m a very big worry wart!)
